Abstract
Higher education plays a significant role in the social and economic progress of a country. Teachers are an important part of the higher education system because they help students improve their academic knowledge, practical skills, confidence, and overall personality development. However, educators working in rural higher education institutions often encounter several difficulties that influence both their teaching performance and professional growth. The present study examines the major problems faced by higher education teachers in rural areas of Maharashtra and explores suitable development approaches for improving educational quality and teacher effectiveness.
Higher education institutions located in rural areas commonly face issues such as inadequate infrastructure, shortage of experienced faculty members, limited digital resources, insufficient opportunities for professional development, and lack of research facilities. In comparison with urban colleges, rural institutions experience more challenges in implementing digital and blended learning practices because of poor internet connectivity and limited technological support. Teachers working in rural areas also deal with workload pressure, low motivation, lack of institutional encouragement, and fewer career advancement opportunities, which ultimately affect job satisfaction and teacher retention.
The present research is descriptive and analytical in nature and is based on secondary data collected from research journals, academic articles, government reports, educational websites, and policy documents related to higher education in Maharashtra. The analysis of the collected information shows that continuous professional development programs, mentorship initiatives, peer learning, digital learning practices, and institutional support can help improve teaching quality and professional competency among rural educators. The study further emphasizes the need for infrastructure development, ICT training, research opportunities, and teacher support programs to reduce the educational gap between rural and urban institutions.
The findings of the research suggest that strengthening rural higher education in Maharashtra requires long-term teacher development strategies and active cooperation among educational institutions, government agencies, and local communities. Providing better training opportunities, improving digital readiness, and offering continuous professional support can help teachers perform more effectively and contribute to inclusive and quality education in rural areas.
