Abstract

Child malnutrition, infant mortality and maternal and child health related problems remain a serious public health challenge in India. The first two years of a child’s life are considered to be very important for his physical, mental and intellectual development. If proper nutrition, breastfeeding and health care are not available during this period, long-term negative effects are seen on the child’s development. Keeping this situation in mind, the Government of India has implemented the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) scheme. Under the ICDS scheme, Anganwadi workers provide health, nutrition and education related services at the community level. Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) training is provided to enhance their efficiency.
The main objective of the present study was to know the views of Anganwadi workers in Kutch district regarding the effectiveness of IYCF training and to assess the development in their knowledge and skills through the training. Descriptive research design was used for the study. A total of 60 Anganwadi workers were selected through convenient sampling method. A questionnaire was used to collect data and the data was analysed using percentage method. The findings of the study showed that most of the respondents had adequate knowledge about ICDS and IYCF. The training increased understanding of breastfeeding, infant feeding, kangaroo mother care, growth monitoring and maternal counselling. The video-based education and sessions conducted by the doctor were considered very useful by the respondents. Based on the study, it can be said that IYCF training significantly increases the knowledge, skills and service efficiency of the Anganwadi workers.
