Abstract

The Giant Panda Theory was developed to provide a theoretical explanation of how time and practice function as holistic and paramount determinants of effective transformational change towards sustainable development. The study was motivated by the observation that existing theories of transformational change, leadership, organisational development, learning, and sustainable development have made significant contributions to scholarship but have not explicitly integrated time and practice into a unified theoretical framework. A philosophical and conceptual theory development design grounded in inductive reasoning was adopted. The theory was developed through systematic observation of the biological and behavioural characteristics of the giant panda, critical review and synthesis of multidisciplinary literature, conceptual analysis, and philosophical reflection. Three characteristics of the giant panda provided the principal inspiration for the theory: the birth of a cub in a vulnerable state, the species' gradual growth and longevity under sustained care, and its continuous daily feeding behaviour. These characteristics symbolise gradual development, sustained investment, and continuous practice, which were conceptually transformed into the theory's central explanatory constructs. The theory proposes that time and practice are holistic and paramount determinants of effective transformational change towards sustainable development. A conceptual framework and mathematical representation were developed to illustrate the relationships among the principal constructs, while assumptions, principles, applications, strengths, and limitations were articulated to strengthen the theory's explanatory capacity. The Giant Panda Theory contributes to contemporary scholarship by introducing an original interdisciplinary framework applicable to education, leadership, organisational development, public administration, community development, and sustainable development. The theory also provides a foundation for future empirical validation and refinement across different disciplines and contexts.
